The Belfast News-Letter reported on the crucial second match between the Belfast and Victoria clubs:
The competition has been very keen this season. All the clubs secured victories and a tie for first place was only averted by those clubs drawing the last match. At that match Belfast lost two games by default, and near the end only two remained unfinished; one was secured by Victoria, and everything depended on the result of the game between Messrs. Carey and Olley. Matters on this board were so evenly balanced and in such a critical position that the slightest slip would have given the victory away. Both, therefore, played with the greatest caution. A deadlock ensued and it was evident neither could force a win, a draw was agreed on, and this gave Belfast the trophy for another year.
